If style and battery life were the only measures of a convertible tablet, the HP Compaq 2710p (,457 direct) would sweep the competition. The aluminum-like exterior is reminiscent of the Apple Mac Book Pro 15-inch ( LED) and the fit-and-finish is sleeker than its consumer sibling, the HP Pavilion tx1000. Perhaps its greatest weapon is the entire day's worth of battery life you get with the combination of a standard battery and an optional battery plate that slides underneath the base. The good news, unfortunately, stops there. The ultra-low-powered processing parts and a washed-out screen are the hard sacrifices that the designers OR the company had to make for the batteries to achieve this longevity. View All 6 Photos in Gallery Despite being an HP Compaq, the 2710p looks nothing like its business siblings (see the HP Compaq 6910p). The housing is still magnesium alloy, but it has an aluminum texture, rather than the typical subdued gray-and-black color scheme. This gives it a look similar to the Apple Mac Book Pro 15-inch ( LED). From a design standpoint, HP could have done a better job of cleaning up the lines and the three latch holes on the cover that fasten the back of the screen to the base. The front latch (which connects to the latch holes on the cover) uses a magnetic piece that pulls a hidden fastener out from the base, which I thought was pretty neat. The screen is securely attached to the base to prevent any movements while you're writing in tablet mode, unlike the Fujitsu Lifebook T2010, which opted not to go with a latch. By eliminating a built-in optical drive, the 2710p is able to get the weight to 3.9 pounds. It's extremely travel-friendly. If you work on your feet all day, you'll appreciate how light the unit feels resting on your forearms (which is the way users typically carry a tablet). The screen is partially in line with the whole multimedia.
HP has the undeniable honor of having produced the best Tablet PC I have ever used, the tc1100. That hybrid Tablet PC is to this day the most innovative mobile PC that has ever been produced. All of the subsequent Tablets that HP has produced have been just laptops with swivel screens, with the exception of the new 2710p Tablet PC. This new model is a design marvel that rekindles the love of using a Tablet PC, and that’s why I bought one. I have been fortunate to have used an evaluation 2710p supplied me by HP for over a month (big thanks to HP). The evaluation was a good one from the unboxing and continued to impress me to the point that I pulled out my credit card and bought one myself. That one arrived yesterday and it’s time to write a good review of the 2710p with an emphasis of the out of box experience ( OOBE) that I have recently lived through. I won’t spend a lot of time covering the unboxing of the 2710p, you can just watch the video to share my experience. No, I will start after the unboxing and cover the device and try to help you understand why I like the 2710p so much. Configuration The 2710p I configured and purchased is the same configuration as the evaluation I used. I was very happy with the performance of the evaluation and I could see no reason to change anything. The pen can function at the default calibration or at a calibration set by another user. However, HP highly recommends that you use the pen only while it is calibrated to your personal handwriting and mouse action motions. Calibration optimizes pen performance for all users and particularly for left-handed users. To calibrate the pen: Select Start > Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Tablet PC Settings. At the bottom of the General tab, tap the Calibrate button. Follow the instructions on the screen. Tap the pen in the exact center of each of the calibration markers. The calibration markers are displayed on the screen as plus signs (+). Be sure to calibrate the pen for use in both portrait and landscape orientations. NOTE: You can display information about any setting in the Tablet PC Settings window by selecting the Help button in the upper-right corner of the window, and then selecting a setting. Using the pen holder To protect the pen when you are not using it, insert the pen, tip first, into the pen holder on the computer. Using the pen Pen preferences are set in the Tablet PC Settings window of the operating system. The preferences include setting the location of on-screen menus for either right-handed or left-handed users, calibrating the screen for pen use, and optimizing handwriting recognition. To access pen preferences: Select Start > Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Tablet PC Settings. Pen options are set in the Pen and Input Devices window. The options include speed settings for double- tapping and press and hold pen use, pen pointer options, and flicks settings. To access pen options: Select Start > Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Pen and Input Devices. The preferences and options you set in the Tablet PC Settings and the Pen and Input Devices window are specific to the pen and the tablet PC. Pointing device preferences, such as pointer speed.
