Part 1 Recovering a Lost Key Download a key retrieval program. Your Windows Product key is buried in the registry, but it can be easily extracted by using a free key retrieval program. Two of the most popular options are Product Key and Key Finder. Both of these programs are free and can be downloaded from the developers' websites. Both offer paid versions, but your Windows key can be retrieved with the free version. 2 Edit step Start the key retrieval program. You typically will not need to install the program. Simply run it and a list of available keys will be displayed. Find the Windows entry to find your key. 3 Edit step Write the key down or copy it. Your key will be listed as Product Key or CD Key. The Windows Product Key is 25 characters split into five groups of five characters each. Part 2 Activating Windows 8.1 Open the Activation window. Open the Activation window by pressing ⊞ Win+ R and typing slui 3. Press ↵ Enter to open the window. 5 Edit step Enter your product key. Enter the key that you either recovered, received with your Windows purchase, or is affixed to your computer on a sticker. You do not need to type the dashes, as they will be added automatically. Windows will automatically attempt to activate as soon as the key is entered. Try the Command Prompt. If the steps above don't work, you can try to enter the key through an elevated Command Prompt. Press ⊞ Win+ X and select Command Prompt ( Admin). Type slmgr.vbs /ipk XXXXX- XXXXX- XXXXX- XXXXX- XXXXX and press ↵ Enter, replacing the XXXXXs with your product key. Be sure to include the dashes. A window should appear saying Installed product key XXXXX successfully. Type slmgr.vbs /ato and press ↵ Enter. A window should appear saying Activating Windows( R) Your Edition. After a moment, if activation was successful, it will say Product activated successfully. Call Microsoft if you still can't activate. If.
Make DVD or USB with the media creation tool: (make sure to select a Windows edition that doesn't have N after it, unless your key is specifically for an N edition.) If you have a Windows 8.1 key, you can just enter it during installation and skip the following steps, continue with install and setup as normal. If you only have a Windows 8.0 (or an upgrade or OEM key that doesn't work in the installer dialog box install with a generic key: Windows 8.1 Core/ Home 334 NH- RXG76-64 THK- C7 CKG- D3 VPT Windows 8.1 Professional XHQ8 N- C3 MCJ- RQXB6- WCHYG- C9 WKB If you have an N or other edition of Windows 8, find the generic key in the complete list. Once it's installed: Right click on the start button, click Command Prompt ( Administrator). Type slmgr /upk to get rid of the generic key (it'll pop up with a success box) and then type slui 3 to bring up a dialog to enter any Windows 8 or 8.1 key that matches up with the version of Windows you installed. OEM keys, upgrade keys, for both 8.0 and 8.1 should all work. If your computer came with Windows 8 or 8.1 preinstalled and you need to get your OEM key from the BIOS, follow these steps: Download this tool: (click Raw button to download) Navigate to where you downloaded it, File-> Open Command Prompt-> Open Command Prompt, then type get_win8key.exe to run it. It'll give you your key. If it gives you an error, that means you do not have a Windows 8.0 or 8.1 key embedded in the BIOS of your computer. You can now use this key in the previous step to activate Windows. UPDATE: WINDOWS 10 If you want to update to Windows 10 directly after installation of Windows 8.1 without having to wait for all the updates to install and the upgrade popup to appear, just use this tool to upgrade.
