The (in)famous Halo I was reading tweets from ex-drivers talking about the (in)famous halo device and a certain Captain America scene came to mind. In the second film, once the Cap finds out Hydra had infiltrated within Shield, he heads to the Triskelion and gives a speech to all the workers there. His words were inspirational (one of the reasons he’s my favourite superhero) but what he says at the end of that speech, I’ve always thought I would never say anything like that. He says: “ The price of freedom is high, it always has been. But it’s a price I’m willing to pay. And if I’m the only one, then so be it. But I’m willing to bet I’m not”. It was that last part that hit me, his faith in that others will do what’s right. I don’t know if the halo is the right decision, I don’t know if it’s safe or only makes things worse. None of us know, because we’re not F1 drivers (despite all the sudden experts that invaded Twitter last Tuesday). But what I wasn’t expecting to see is ex-drivers being so overly negative, taking to the social sites to express their despair and anger at what F1 was doing. It’s not a sport anymore. How many times have we heard that It amazes me because these guys are drivers, they are the ones risking their lives on track, and there’s the FIA trying to come up with something that may improve safety. But instead of being grateful and supportive, they encourage the fans to go mad at the powers-that-be so that the halo device will not go through. Now, I’m not saying the halo is the right decision. I have no idea if it is. But we’re always asking the FIA to improve safety, and when they do try, we go mad at them for doing anything at all. But God forbid a driver dies on track, then we go mad at them again for not moving a finger to stop it. It doesn’t make any sense!
